Position Highlights

This Position will be responsible for assessing stakeholder needs and developing, delivering, and evaluating an effective outcome-based program in Agriculture and Natural Resources in La Paz County, with emphasis on Alfalfa and Cotton, the two main crops in the area, but not discounting other crops grown in the area. The position will work to identify community needs through existing data from various agencies (i.e. USDA, AZDA, NASS, etc.), as well as gain information through surveys and discussions with stakeholders, organizations, and local agencies. Programming will focus on two strategic plan areas: disseminate science-based information on crop and pest management technologies of the crops grown in the area, and building good relationships with stakeholders, organizations, county and tribal governments, and agencies critical in the development and delivery of a successful Ag and Natural Resources program. Consults and collaborates with State Extension Specialists and Ag Agents to provide educational programs, crop management, and pest and disease diagnosis to address field problems.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Program Development
    • A) Conducts a systematic analysis of national, state, and county Ag and Natural Resources data, local resources, and historical information in order to identify community assets, program needs, and teaching opportunities, with focus on the crops grown in the area (alfalfa, cotton, small grains).
    • B) Identifies resources (grants, contracts, in-kind contributions, etc.) to enhance programs.
    • C) In cooperation with community groups, local leaders, Extension advisory groups, the ANR Associate Director, the County Extension Director and other Extension professionals, develops an annual Plan of Work.
    • D) Consults with Extension faculty, Experiment Station researchers, and other experts in the development of educational programs, applied research, and scholarly works.
  • Program Implementation
    • A) Conducts creative programming that may include workshops and problem solving field research, to address priority needs of farmers and other target audiences. May need to utilize new technology to improve reach to target audience.
    • B) Participates in statewide working groups to develop new and creative programming efforts.
    • C) Prepares educational materials, evaluation instruments, teaching materials and publicity information in support of state, county, and community initiatives.
    • D) Functions as a resource for other agencies and organizations. Promotes interaction and cooperation among various groups.
    • E) Disseminates educational materials through county-wide and/or multi-county events, workshops, websites, newsletters and other mass media methods, use of volunteers, and other methods.
    • F) Monitor crop, pest and disease status, and in consultation with Extension Specialists and Agents, provide recommendations on how to manage identified problems.
    • G) Provides for recruitment, training and recognition of volunteers and assists them in the conduct of educational programs as appropriate.
    • H) Promotes communication and teamwork with county and state Extension, other faculty and youth professionals.
    • I) Promotes Cooperative Extension as the outreach arm of the University of Arizona as the state land-grant University.
  • Program Results
    • A) Evaluate and document results and impacts of educational programs.
    • B) Communicates program results to both professional peers and clientele through periodic reports, scholarly works, and various types of publications (e.g., bulletins/fact sheets, popular articles, state publications, scientific articles, social media, video and computer programs.
    • C) Counsels with the County Extension Director and the ANR Associate Director to evaluate program effectiveness and personal achievements as a member of Extension Staff.

  • Desire and capability of working with diverse stakeholders and volunteers, self-confidence and self-efficacy, good time management, good judgment and sensitivity while working with peers and community members alike.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Entomology, or related field or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • The person must have the ability to obtain an Arizona driver's license, provide their own transportation, be able to travel statewide using all modes of transportation and have the ability to drive according to the University .
  • The ability to travel as appropriate to meet stakeholder needs.
