Position Summary

The Office of Communications at the University of Arizona Health Sciences is seeking a highly qualified professional for the role of Director, Communications/Digital Content and Media Relations, who will be responsible for planning and executing an external communications strategy that engages target audiences with tailored written content to advance the University of Arizona Health Sciences brand and strategic initiatives.

Reporting to the Executive Director for Communications and Brand Promotion, this position will develop and implement a strategy to create compelling content for owned and earned media. This position is responsible for executing and overseeing writing, editing, production and pitching of optimized content that promotes the Health Sciences brand, strategic initiatives, research and accomplishments.

Through the creation of full-package stories for owned platforms and news releases/advisories/pitches, the position will promote signature content for the brand. The position will work with traditional media and niche online publishers to expand reach. This position will oversee a Manager, Communications/Digital Content and Media relations, who will help execute the strategy through thematic content development.

This position will work collaboratively with the Director, Communications/Video Content and other team members in the Office of Communications to ensure optimization of content and outcomes.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Set strategy and vision for external written content to help create a vibrant University of Arizona Health Sciences presence and promote the institution's strategic priorities.
  • Direct development and execution of content creation from conception to completion for distribution across University of Arizona Health Sciences digital platforms and to local, regional and national media.
  • Plan content calendar and proactively identify opportunities for strategic content development through regular engagement with key faculty and staff across the Health Sciences.
  • Works closely with the Executive Director for Communications and Brand Promotion and the Director, Communications/Video Content to design communications plans that promote the mission and activities of the University of Arizona Health Sciences and deliver a value proposition to targeted audiences.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Services and Brand Management, and Digital and Interactive Media teams to optimize written content awareness and engagement.
  • Help define, establish and align key performance indicators within broader department and institution goals.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of related work experience, including 3 years of experience managing communications/content development staff.

  • Influences others outside of own job area on policies, practices and procedures.
  • Uses information exchange, influence, and active persuasion to gain cooperation of others to support department objectives.
