The UA College of Medicine - Phoenix is seeking a highly qualified professional for the role of Senior Director for Marketing & Communications – Phoenix on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus.


The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader attuned to organizational culture and internal stakeholders who excels at cultivating relationships and garners the trust and confidence of leadership, faculty, staff and students.


This individual will possess a combination of creativity and business savvy, will thrive in a fast-paced environment oriented toward growth and innovation, and will promote a culture of high performance, continuous improvement and a commitment to quality. The Senior Director will work collaboratively with the UAHS AVP for Communications/Public Affairs, UA Marketing & Brand Management and Communications teams.


The Senior Director will have the unique opportunity to develop and implement the strategic imperatives and organizational development efforts to actualize the university’s new overall strategic communications/external engagement/brand reputation plans for the College of Medicine – Phoenix.


Together, these leaders will elevate UA’s stature and positively position the College of Medicine - Phoenix as leaders in medical education and research, national and internationally.


As the Senior Director, this role will act as a key ambassador for the UA and will use in-depth knowledge and experience in brand strategy, marketing, advertising, digital media, stakeholder engagement and creative outreach approaches to innovate and advance a distinctive and strengthened organizational brand.


In this role, the Senior Director is expected manage, build and lead an effective team of professionals with strength in brand and positioning strategy, web and digital platforms, public affairs, creative video and photography services, institutional events, and external engagement and advocacy.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Senior Director will oversee leadership and operations in the following functional areas on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus:

  • Marketing, Communications, Public Affairs and Media Production, to ensure that activities and materials are produced are high quality and strategically, effectively and cohesively convey consistent messages in support of UA's missions, goals and objectives.
  • Alumni Development & Integrated Fundraising, supports, communicates and coordinates fundraising efforts ensuring that philanthropic strategies and activities are aligned, including opportunities to increase alumni engagement.
  • Community Outreach & Engagement, which develops partnerships with schools, non-profits and festivals to leverage deep engagement with the intent to improve the Phoenix community through events, tours and presentations.
  • Institutional Events, to provide full logistics and reservation/administrative support for all 400+ Phoenix Biomedical Campus events each year, including signature events.
  • Develop and implement an integrated marketing communications plan to broaden awareness of the UA’s academic and research prowess and drive engagement across key stakeholder audiences in Phoenix (signage/internal and external communications/social media/podcasts/print literature/website). Coordinate marketing initiatives across campus to ensure consistency in a decentralized structure.
  • Collaborate with leadership/deans and campus communicators in support of UA’s strategic priorities.
  • Serve as a trusted resource to deans, directors and campus communicators for expert advice, training and best practices.
  • Serve as campus crisis communication leader and spokeswoman for media inquiries, when appropriate.
  • Serve as executive communications lead for COM-P Dean, developing talking points, op-eds, blogs scripts and presentations.
  • Lead VIP stakeholder engagement: managing tours, meetings, roundtables, etc. for partners and key opinion leaders.
  • Work collaboratively with UA Foundation and Alumni Affairs teams to develop synergistic fundraising campaigns.
  • Serves as department leader, managing a 14-person team and oversee all budget and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Contributes to the overall success of UA in fulfilling its mission, by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Excellent written, communication and copy-editing skills.
  • Knowledge of the media and its use gaining exposure for the UA.
  • Excellent event planning skills and community engagement strategies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master Degree-level education, with at least 10 years of experience in communications in a healthcare matrixed / higher education environment; AND 10 years' experience in development of comprehensive communications and marketing plans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Deep experience working with executive leadership.
  • Extensive media and corporate relations experience.
  • A strong communicator, storyteller and strategist.
  • Politically savvy and diplomatic.
  • Strong media and corporate relationships in business, health care and higher education
  • Flexible and able to navigate ambiguity and succeed in a fast-paced environment.
  • High energy, collaborative individual who can manage teams while also rolling up sleeves and getting work done.
  • Experience in team-oriented supervision and management.
  • Strong experience with social media tools and channels to drive communications messages.
  • Proven experience working at an executive level in healthcare and/or higher education.
