Position Summary

The Director of Development's focus is on securing private support for merit based scholarships used to recruit and retain the best and brightest students to the University of Arizona (UA). This position's focus is in direct alignment of the objectives outlined in Pillar 1 of the UA Strategic Plan.

The Director of Development works in cooperation with UA Foundation's Leadership Teams and the Dean of the Honors College, as well as University Development Program (UDP) colleagues, including scholarship administration, foundation relations, gift planning, stewardship, events, and college based frontline fundraisers.

The Director is a frontline fundraiser focused on the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective major gift ($25,000+) donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations.

The University of Arizona is in the process of creating a new classification and compensation architecture. Duties & Responsibilities

*Develop personalized strategies for all assigned donors and prospects which will build, maintain and enhance relationships while furthering donors' philanthropic objectives.
*Help to support and promote a culture of philanthropy across the UA and work effectively as part of the greater UDP.
*Plan, coordinate, and schedule weekly personal visits with prospects and donors utilizing UDP software, introductory letters, emails and phone calls to set appointments.
*Maintain current and accurate records of donor prospects in the UDP computer records system. On a weekly basis, enter contact reports of all visits, significant telephone conversations, letters and correspondence, gift solicitations, and other communications with donors. Maintain information about current and future gift proposals (asks).
*Provide input and direction for any Honors/Merit scholarship development-focused newsletters, invitations, brochures, and other publications/communications, as needed.
*Design and manage solicitation and stewardship plans in Raiser's Edge/ Lynx to support Honors/Merit scholarship fundraising.
*Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the Honors program and work closely with the Dean of the Honors College and Honors College staff to understand priorities of the program.
*Ensure all Honors/Merit contributions are properly documented and handled in accordance with the University of Arizona Gift Policy.
*Work with the UA Foundation's Scholarship Administration Team to monitor the activities of all centrally managed Honors/Merit scholarships in order to ensure compliance with donor requirements and distribution of all available funding.
*Work with UDP Marketing and Communications to development print and online development materials related to Honors/Merit Scholarships.
*Work closely with college and regional development officers to reinforce their role as scholarship fund raisers.
*Establish a process for recognizing the contribution of development officers to Honors/Merit scholarship gifts.
*Partners with, and effectively utilizes, the development professionals and resources of the UDP, including campus-based development teams, the offices of Regional Development; Gift Planning; Annual Giving (telephone, direct-mail, and e-solicitation services); Leadership Annual Giving; Board and Donor Engagement: Marketing and Communications; Prospect Development; Financial Services; Information Services; and the Foundation Relations/Grant Information, Facilitation, and Training (GIFT) Center (preparation and submission of grant proposals to foundations).
*Utilizes the common systems, policies and procedures adhered to by UDP team members.
*Creatively leverages outreach activities (e.g. tours, lectures, exhibits, etc.) to develop new major gift prospects.
*After an initial 3-month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of at least 100 current or prospect donor visits and the successful closure of 15+ major/principal gift proposals per year, with an expectation of $1M+ raised after the initial on-boarding period (with incremental increases after the first year).
*Represent the UA Foundation, UDP and Honor/Merit Scholarships at public events, including agreed-upon delivering remarks.
*Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

*Knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to scholarships.
*Ability to understand and follow all Federal, UA and UDP policies and procedures, including UA and UDP scholarship and financial aid policies, as well as the University of Arizona Gift Policy.
*Knowledge and understanding of development and fund-raising principles and procedures.
*Excellent interpersonal skills, strong ability to create personal relationships, and proven success in executing moves management actions and closing six-figure philanthropic gifts.
*Ability to effectively communicate the University of Arizona mission, strategic plan, and case for philanthropic support.
*Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with donors, UDP colleagues, and UA faculty, administration and staff members.
*Ability to inspire cooperation and participation.
*Ability to make good decisions and to exercise good judgment and discretion.
*Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
*Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
*Excellent time management and organizational skills.
*Excellent initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
*Knowledge of computer programs such as MS Office products and donor databases.

Minimum Qualifications

*Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university program; AND,
*Five or more years of development officer experience, or appropriate transferable skills.
*Demonstrated knowledge of development and fundraising principles and procedures.
*Experience working with volunteers, faculty, staff, and students.
*Experience writing proposals, grants, and reports.
*Outstanding interpersonal/relationship skills
*Excellent oral and written communications
*Experience developing and executing plans for large fundraising initiatives.
*Possession of a valid Arizona driver's license upon employment and ability to drive according to the University .

Preferred Qualifications

*Fund raising experience in a higher education setting.
*Experience administering and managing a scholarship development program.
*Evidence of vision, leadership, and ability secure strategic partnerships and grants.
*Experience with, knowledge of, and enthusiasm for the UA and the UA Strategic Plan.
