Position Summary

The Senior VP of Health Sciences Office is seeking candidates for Senior Accountant, Post-Award, an integral member of the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center (UAHS) Post Award Administration team.


This position will actively manage an assigned portfolio of accounts (federal and institutional) related to the All of Us Research Program funded by the National Institutes of Health. The selected candidate is expected to perform professional accounting activities in a complex, evolving and fast-paced environment and therefore must be flexible and adaptable. This position will work independently and requires expert knowledge and professional application of fund accounting principles, practices and techniques in accordance with the policies and procedures of the UA. Professional demeanor, customer service, and teamwork are required for this position while maintaining sensitivity with confidential information. The incumbent must have the ability to effectively assess and respond to customer needs and demonstrate skill in administrative team support.


This position will interact extensively with the University of Arizona Sponsored Projects Services, UA Financial Services Office, and UA Health Sciences (UAHS) activities and accounting systems. This position will report to the Senior Business Manager of the All of Us Research Program, and will closely collaborate with the Office of the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, especially for expenditure tracking related to the institutional commitments and support.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Reconcile and manage an assigned portfolio of grants, contracts and other funding sources, ensuring compliance with sponsor, UA and governmental policies and regulations.
  • Prepare/process financial transactions, including PCard, purchase requisitions, disbursement vouchers, interdepartmental billing forms, travel expense reports, etc.
  • Review, monitor and approve grant expenditures and ensure alignment with contract budget and scope of work and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, UA policies and procedures, and sponsor terms, conditions, and regulations.
  • Utilize UAccess systems to monitor grant account budgets, balances and account reconciliations, and provide explanations and recommendations for budget variances.
  • Prepare Salary Expense Transfers and General Error Corrections as necessary to move expenses to appropriate accounts or object codes.
  • Monitor grant and contract renewals or continuations and follow up with Principal Investigators (PI) as necessary.
  • Support PIs and UAHS Research Administration as necessary through grant lifecycle, assisting in development and submission of change requests for PI including scope of work, extensions or renewals, re-budgeting and close-out.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and projections for PI's, monitor account budgets, balances and account reconciliations, and meets with PI's programs on a regular basis.
  • Assist PIs in review and management of subaward agreements, invoices, renewals and modifications.
  • Calculate cost-share and review/approve effort reports as necessary.
  • Interact with external departments, central administration, PIs, research staff and administration to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve funding issues.
  • Maintain funding plans for assigned PIs and employees to ensure payment according to budgets and effort, update plan for roll over and all funds budgets.
  • Support the development and implementation of reports and tools to monitor sponsored accounts for budgeting, forecasting, and other functionality. Support Business Managers and others on complex transactions.
  • Provides technical guidance and services to other accounting and university staff involving complex issues or special projects.
  • Analyze, develop and document accounting and business procedures, practices and controls related to the overall office functions and tasks.
  • Maintain accounting document files.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Skill in performing detailed numerical computations.
  • Skill in preparing detailed reports on a timely basis.
  • Skill in the use of computer hardware and software.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting AND three (3) years of professional accounting experience; OR, Seven (7) years progressively responsible and diverse accounting experience and coursework which included at least three (3) years professional accounting in which a broad exposure to all areas of accounting and accounting principles, practices and procedures was acquired; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least three (3) years' experience in post-award accounting for federal research.
  • Extensive experience with UA policies and procedures, and systems: UAccess Analytics, Financials, Employee, Research.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and Word.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
