Position Summary

The Department of Medicine has a current opening for a Chief of its Division of Nephrology who will also hold a Senior Level tenure track faculty position. While the department is posting both a tenure track and a career track position, only one will be filled. Tenure-track faculty in the department focus on scholarship including scholarship of discovery, clinical scholarship and educational scholarship with the remaining effort dedicated to the clinical mission.

The Nephrology Chief will provide leadership, support and mentoring of faculty for the division's research, educational and clinical efforts. Applicants must hold a medical degree (M.D.) and be board certified in Nephrology. The successful candidate is expected to be an experienced academic leader and accomplished program builder with a national reputation in scholarship. The selected candidate will have a well-supported opportunity to build a world-class division that sets the standards for a 21st Century Department of Medicine and medical school.

The Nephrology Chief will provide leadership, direction and administration and management for the division. She/he will be responsible for recruitment of faculty and will be an accessible mentor and role model. She/he will work with UAHS leadership to develop and implement strategic plans and to promote academic and clinical productivity and quality and collaboration across divisions, departments, the campus and the community.

She/he will develop and sustain a strong, externally funded research program within the Division of Nephrology and provide research mentoring to faculty. She/he will recruit faculty members with established research programs and grant funding.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic:

  • Oversee and manage the Division's budgets (all funds), resources and fiscal operations to achieve agreed upon annual performance benchmarks.
  • Provide effective leadership, mentorship, and oversight of the Division to ensure alignment with UAHS, College, Department and enterprise strategies with performance to appropriate metrics of success.
  • Attract and retain highly motivated and well-qualified faculty, staff and students to the Division and promote their academic/professional development.
  • Provide effective leadership, mentorship, and oversight of the Division's training programs with emphasis on improved programmatic diversity, academic career placement, and physician-scientist (e.g., F32, K-series awardees) development.
  • Champion and serve as the chief spokesperson for the Division internally and externally.

Research:

  • Strategically guide, enhance and expand the sponsored research portfolio of the Division.
  • Improve the research portfolio of the Division in strategic areas of emphasis including clinical and translational research, precision health ("'omics") health disparities, and health outcomes, as measured by impact factors including peer reviewed publications and team-based sponsored research awards.
  • Work closely with program leaders across the University to develop integrated strategies that fulfill the clinical and translational research mission of the Department.

Clinical:

  • All clinical service will be provided at the University of Arizona College of Medicine's affiliate institution, Banner Healthcare.
  • Work in collaboration with Banner-University Medicine to expand and improve the clinical enterprise to make the Banner-University Medical Center a destination for patients in need of Nephrology expertise regionally and nationally.
  • Develop cohesive and mutually beneficial relationships with family physicians in the Banner-University Medicine primary service areas, throughout Arizona and the greater Southwest.
  • Provide leadership for continual improvement and transformation for optimal care provision of the Department’s ambulatory care delivery system to include monitoring and improving access to care in all practice sites.
  • Assure the development of a platform for standardization of preventive and chronic disease care by well-formed clinical teams in a patient- and family-centered environment.
  • As Division Chief, the candidate will be responsible for leadership and accountability of the clinical enterprise initiatives focused on nephrology-based inpatient, outpatient and procedural unit clinical performance (e.g., service efficiency, quality improvement, capital and space programming, financial, patient satisfaction, etc.).
  • Champion and serve as the chief spokesperson for the Division internally and externally.
  • Work closely with the Department Chair, current faculty and Banner Network staff to further develop programs in Nephrology.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD or DO Degree.
  • Board Certified in related field.
  • Arizona Medical License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in a suitable leadership role.
  • Record of productivity in academic accomplishments, as evidenced by publications and successful peer-reviewed funding.
  • Established expertise in working with diverse patient populations.
